Program description: The Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI), Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC), and Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) will be conducting a large
community-based study of Attractive Targeted Sugar Bait (ATSB) aimed at reducing malaria burden in
western Kenya. The 3-year project is part of a larger international ATSB consortium involving three countries
in Africa, and international partners in the UK and USA. As part of this effort, KEMRI is searching for
community interviewers for the cohort study, a component of the ATSB trial.
Position: Clerk (Community Interviewer) KMR 10 - (20 Positions)
Location: Alego Usonga and Rarieda sub counties
Reports to: Study Coordinator
The Community Interviewer will report directly to the study coordinator, will be responsible for consenting
study participants, enrolling and following up cohort study participants, collecting timely and accurate data in
his or her assigned clusters.
S/he must be flexible and work within the existing structure, in a professional and ethical manner with
competence, accountability and integrity.
O-level Secondary Education with a minimum grade of C-(Minus)
Good English, Swahili and Dholuo, both spoken and written.
Ability to ride a motorcycle.
Knowledge of office computer packages or ability to work with smart phones.
Ability to write brief reports and keep records.
MUST be a resident or willing to live and work in the study area.
Experience in working in a cohort study and household survey will be an advantage.
Experience in collection of blood samples also an added advantage.
Specific Tasks and Responsibilities
The Community Interviewers’ responsibilities shall include and not be limited to the following:
Recruit and consent study participants
Schedule participant for monthly follow up.
Collect a blood sample by fingerpick (adults) and/or heel prick (infants)
Prepare dried blood spots (DBS) on filter paper.
Perform a Malaria RDT.
Complete study forms accurately and completely.
Ensure proper labelling, storage and tracking of samples and work with the study coordinator to
arrange for transport to the laboratory.
Conduct interviews with study participants within the study villages.
Carry out community sensitization and mobilization for the ATSB trial.
Educate the community on the ATSB and communicate with the study coordinator on the concerns
and all the field issues.
Ensure that he/she has requisite supplies in good time.
Attend study field meetings and report on progress of work.
MUST be courteous, respectful, proactive, conscientious, punctual, honest, and hardworking.
Work closely with the Data Manager to solve queries.
Must be able to relate well with the MOH staff and the community.
Perform any other duties assigned or delegated by the study management.
Terms of Employment:
Contract as per KEMRI scheme of service. Probation period for the first 3 months.
Remuneration: Compensation is negotiable within a relevant grade, based on educational levels, relevant
experience and demonstrated competency. The salary scheme is based on the KEMRI scales
