Virtual Team Building Activities to Boost Remote Employees’ Morale

In the face of the pandemic and its subsequent lockdown and stay-at-home containment measures, remote work has been taken up by many organizations.

Remote work certainly has its upside especially in the face of the pandemic, but also has its challenges. In this edition, we’ll focus more on remote work, discussing ways to adapt, and conquer the changing work environment and model.

Team morale is often influenced by a variety of everyday interactions. From team lunches, along-the-office-corridor interactions to spontaneous conversations and after-work drinks, employees who work together in an office have plenty of opportunities and time to build relationships. Remote employees, however do not.

So, how do you boost your remote employees’ team spirit and morale?

  • Utilizing team chat apps

Team chat platforms, such as Slack or Trello, can help bring your virtual team building activities into one place. Create fun channels where your team can chat and share funny gifs, work related issues etc.

  • Making communication visual rather than just online chats and audio calls

Utilize video communication tools such as Zoom, or Google Meet. By encouraging visual face-to-face conversations, you can make communication feel more personal, help remote employees feel more connected, and facilitate a higher level of participation and productivity during meetings.

  • Taking coffee breaks

Working in an office, it is nice to take a break with colleagues e.g.over a cup of coffee. Remote employees can still engage in this interaction virtually by dedicating time for regular breaks. This helps to socialize, relieve stress, and boost employee morale.

  • Playing games

Games are one of the favorite virtual team building activities. Why? By encouraging some friendly competition, games are a great way to break the ice and let everyone’s personality shine through, encourage team -bonding in a less formal setting. Virtual games come in handy during such team building sessions.

  • Appointing a virtual team champion

As an employer, if you don’t have the time to manage these virtual team building activities, appoint a motivated employee as your team’s virtual champion. This individual can help share the responsibility by ensuring all of these great ideas are actually put into place. They can also serve as a liaison between you and the rest of the team—ensuring every remote employee feels like they have a voice, as well as the support of their manager.

Technology allows employers to make these virtual team building activities as simple or sophisticated as they would like! Employers need to find opportunities and activities to facilitate these and more virtual inter-personal interactions and help remote employees feel connected as a team and be high in morale and team spirit, which results in greater productivity, collaboration, and job satisfaction.
