How jobseekers can engage and derive value on LinkedIn

LinkedIn is one of the world's largest professional job search and networking platforms. It's also one of the most influential social media networks, with more than 740 million members in 2021. That is a lot of potential contacts!

Members use the site to look and apply for jobs, post jobs, and keep in touch with business associates, clients, and co-workers. But it can do so much more

Once you make your profile stand out among other users and jobseekers, LinkedIn can help you in job opportunity mapping, building awareness of your brand, and help you to land amazing jobs at some of the greatest companies.

In this article, we look at ways to engage and derive value on LinkedIn for personal, professional and organizational success.

  1. Your connections

Before engaging on LinkedIn, develop a strategy with clearly defined goals and objectives you want to meet and a plan on how to meet them. For instance if you want to develop new business opportunities, or find a new job, you must ensure that the people you are connecting with are relevant, e.g.:

  • Decision makers within the organizations you are targeting.
  • Known influencers e.g. social media influencers.
  • Job placement platforms that advertise hiring companies and job vacancies.
  • Past employers who will be willing to add recommendations to your profile


  1. The Content you share and follow

Develop, share and follow interesting, original value-adding, educational, compelling and interesting contents.  These may be blogs by hiring firms, articles by job placement platforms etc.

  1. Stay up-to-date by regularly updating your profile and information.

This can be achieved by regularly reviewing your title, editing your bio, About and expanding your work experience, uploading professional documents like the CV and Resume etc.

Engage on you LinkedIn profile by liking, commenting on and sharing relevant and interesting content.

Your connections can write "recommendations" for your profile, and offer "endorsements" of your skills, and you can do the same in return.

Recommendations are personal testimonials that emphasize your professional abilities. Aim to collect a handful of these by asking people you've worked with to write one for you.


When used well, LinkedIn can be an invaluable tool for job searches and recruitment, and a great way to stay up to date with industry news, enhance your professional reputation, and increase your visibility among potential employers.
